Screen time

The average American spends more than five hours watching TV, playing video games or on their cellphones. But how many hours of screen time is healthy?

A study has found that the type of screen time you invest in can be as important as the number of hours you spend. Watching TV for four hours or browsing on your phone for an hour a day is just as bad as logging eight hours of videogame play.

In fact, those who watch TV and play videogames both were found to have higher rates of obesity, ADHD, poor physical fitness and poor mental health than those who used cellphones and computers for similar amounts of time.

Studies have found that prolonged screen time is associated with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and loneliness.

The first type of screen time is passive activity where people are not doing anything while they are on the device.

The second type is active which includes scrolling social media, playing games or watching videos.
The third type of activity is interactive which includes browsing the internet or using a mobile phone actively to call someone.
And the last one is interdependent which includes watching a movie with a family member or communicating on WhatsApp with friends and family members.

Screen time has become more prevalent in modern society with technology advancing. The 4 types of screen time include passive, active, interactive and interdependent screen time. In some cases it belongs healthy for an individual but in other cases it can be harmful to their mental health such as depression, anxiety and loneliness.

Screen time is a combination of digital device time, especially the time spent on phone screens, and TV time.

Excessive screen time can lead to a wide range of health issues, including sleeplessness, eyestrain, depression and obesity.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has revised their past recommendation about screen time for children. Experts now recommend that children under 18 months of age should not be watching any screens at all. Children from 18 months to 2 years should only watch educational videos, not live TV shows or movies, for no more than an hour a day. They also recommend that children ages 3-5 spend no more than two hours in front of a screen per day at any one point. Beyond that, the AAP recommends limiting video games to 30 minutes per day and other devices to two hours total per day.

A new study from the American Psychiatric Association claims that adults should limit their screen time to two hours a day. These adults are not just children, but also teenagers and adults.

The study found that people who spent more than two hours a day on the phone were 18% more likely to develop problems with their mental health than those who spend less than two hours in a day on the screen.

It has been said that there is a clear link between screen time and addiction as it depletes levels of dopamine in the brain which is needed for healthy functioning.
